PCF.- Guard against new defense, military treaties with US -- CPP

By CPP Information Bureau
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today called on the Filipino people to guard against and oppose any plan of the Aquino government to forge new defense and military treaties with the US government in the face of the “interventionist overdrive” of the US government to push its military weight into the Asia-Pacific region.

The CPP issued this statement as Gen. Martine Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other top military officials of the US government arrived in Manila on June 3 for a two-day visit. General Dempsey is set to meet with top security and military officials of the Aquino government to further discuss the matter of forging new security agreements which were initially brought up in the Strategic Security Dialogue held earlier this year in Washington DC in the US.

“Over the past few months, the US and Aquino governments have been discussing arrangements that will provide the US military with greater access to Philippine land, water and airspace, and support facilities for the docking and resupply of US warships, stationing of US troops and base for the operations of US spy and attack drones,” added the CPP.

“In accordance with the Strategic Security Dialogue, the Aquino government has been coming up with a list of sea ports, air ports, military camps and other facilities which it plan to give the US military access to,” pointed out the CPP. “These new agreements to grant the US military unprecendented access to Philippine facilities are likely to be dressed up as enhancements to the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.”

“The matter of forging a new treaty or amendment or enhancement of the existing Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) is likely to be brought up in Benigno Aquino’s upcoming official visit to the US where he is set to meet imperialist chieftain Barrack Obama,” said the CPP.

“In defense and pursuit of Philippine national sovereignty, the Filipino people must vigorously oppose any plan to sign a new treaty or through the MDT allow the US military to gain unprecedented access to Philippine facilities and never before seen levels of impunity in trampling Philippine sovereignty.”

“The visit of the top general of the American government in the Philippines, and recently in Singapore, Australia and Vietnam, indicates that the US imperialists are in an overdrive to push its power in the Asia-Pacific region, forging one treaty after another to allow the US military access to military support facilities in various countries in the region,” added the CPP.

In his tour of Singapore, Vietnam and other Asian countries in the past several days, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta bared plans of the US government to “rebalance” its troops that will see the deployment of as much as 60% of its overseas troops in the Asia-Pacific region by 2020.
